1969: Fantastic Four #83 Kirby 1974: Giant-Size Avengers #1 Buckler |
Comic book swipes and homages, along with art that appears to have been--at least in part!-- inspired by other art. And there's lots of the Silver Age Fantastic Four here because that was just about my favorite comic book back then!
Many of you have let me know that some of my image pairings & arrangements pop up in other venues such as Facebook Swipe groups (esp. the great COMICS SWIPES Facebook group). Well, I'm flattered the posts are popular and that people enjoy PANELOCITY's swipes and "inspired bys", regardless of where they are presented. After all, the Internet is meant for sharing, right?

Fantastic Four #148 (Pt 36) Thor, Hercules, Ben and Sandman
1974: Fantastic Four #148 Rich Buckler |
1965: Journey Into Mystery Annual #1 Jack Kirby |
The Thor-Hercules image is from the Kirby JiM Annual #1 cover, below. And it could be that the smaller-sized JiM Annual #1 house ad (seen in FF #42 and #43, for example) was used as the foundation for the FF #148 Thing-Sandman image.

Fantastic Four #148 (Pt 35) Cap 'n' Trapster Are the Bee's Knees...Plus Gil Kane!
1974: Fantastic Four #148 Rich Buckler |
1966: Tales of Suspense #85 Jack Kirby |
Bonus! Gil Kane's Kirbyesque Cap, a few issues later in ToS #88 |
Tales of Suspense #88 Gil Kane
Like many other Marvel pencilers, Gil Kane was asked to approximate Kirby's dynamic storytelling. Check out Kane's 1960s Captain America Suspense run and you'll see plenty of Kirby references--another Cap example here!

Fantastic Four #148 (Pt 29) Reed's Ray Gun Redux
In the FF#148 sequence, Reed claims he's "just rigged" the new tracing device he's holding --but it sure looks awfully similar to the Power Amplifier he used back in #40. Either Reed revamped the first device or else he really likes that design for his doohickeys!

1974: Fantastic Four #147 Buckler |
1966: Fantastic Four Annual #4 Jack Kirby |
Psst! Did you notice that most of the panels on the last page of #147 are based on images from 1966's FF Annual #4? Why don't we take a look at the page in question:

The only panel not from FF Annual #4 is panel five, Namor and Sue, which is based on a panel from 1967's Fantastic Four #66.
