Popular Thing Pose by Kirby, Kane, Buscema, Buckler and Perez

Classic Benjamin J. Grimm: standard shots of Ben as punching bag.

Feb. 1968: Fantastic Four #71  Jack Kirby

Jan. 1973: Marvel Team-Up #6  Gil Kane

Dec. 1973: Fantastic Four #141 John Buscema

March 1974: Fantastic Four #144 Rich Buckler

Dec. 1976: Fantastic Four #177 George Perez
Perez changes the legs and adopts Buscema's open mouth expression

If Buscema's and Buckler's panels look familiar, it's because we've seen them before here and here.  How do Kane's and Perez's stack up?

Fantastic Four #144 (Pt 27) Krrak!

1966: Fantastic Four #56  Jack Kirby

1974: Fantastic Four #144  Buckler

Fun fact: Both KRRAK!s were lettered by artful Artie Simek.

Next up: the estimable Giant-Size Super-Stars #1, published in February 1974.  I think you'll be surprised by several of the source panels, especially the ones involving the mighty Thundra.

Fantastic Four #144 (Pt 26) Human Torch: Three on a Match

Human Torch sequence from FF #144:

Fantastic Four #144  (1974) Buckler

The breakdown:

The 144 panel (l.) is almost a mirror image of  1969's Fantastic Four 90 (r.)

Fantastic Four 144 (1974) Buckler       Fantastic Four 81 (1968) Kirby

Fantastic Four 144 (1974) Buckler       Fantastic Four 99 (1970) Kirby

The #99 Kirby panel is an old reliable, rather generic Torch standard. For example, check it out in Fantastic Four #153.

The panels in context:

Sequence from Fantastic Four #144 (1974) Buckler

Sequence from Fantastic Four #65 (1967) Kirby

And do you think Johnny's hunched-over, awkward pose in #144's bottom left corner was a riff on Reed's pose in #65's bottom left corner?
