Thor #227 - Thunder God, Human Torch

Thor #227 was published at around the same time as Fantastic Four #150 and had the same creative team, Gerry Conway and Rich Buckler.  As mentioned, like his FF run Buckler's 1974 Thor run relied heavily on Kirby swipes.  Here, #227 Thor's details are clearly based on the well-known Thunder God splash in Thor #124.

But I think there was another Kirby page used as a model here too. Take a look at the positioning of the background figures and the curved shape of the Torch's and Thor's torsos--these point me to this Fantastic Four #89 splash.

Sure, on the face of it this is a fairly standard superteam group shot. But there was something awfully familiar about the characters' positions, especially Cap's dramatic pointing finger and Iron Man's very awkward crouch.  And then--it hit me!

Panelocity Plus! GSA #1's Cap figure also seems based in part on Sal Buscema's dynamic, Kirbyesque Cap on the cover of Avengers #71 (1969). 

Roy Thomas wrote GSAvengers1 and Avengers 71--as if you didn't know already know that, since both issues spotlight some legendary Timely Golden Age characters...you know 'em as the All-Winners Squad/Invaders.  ;)  

And I'm sure all you True Believers noticed and appreciated Buckler's fine recreation of the very famous All Winners Comics #19 cover (as the Whizzer relates his days with that fabled team).
