1969: X-Men #57 by Neal Adams Larry Trask |
1972: Avengers #102 by Rich Buckler Quicksilver |
Comic book swipes and homages, along with art that appears to have been--at least in part!-- inspired by other art. And there's lots of the Silver Age Fantastic Four here because that was just about my favorite comic book back then!
Interesting. Both illustrations concern Larry Trask and the Sentinels, yet only one of those profile shots on the far left are actually of Larry Trask.
ReplyDeleteI was "there" when Stan Lee wrote the first Sentinels story (X-Men #14-16), but missed all of the Neal Adams issues thanks to the spotty newsstand distribution of the 1960s and 1970s.
Yep, both those series dealt with the Sentinels so it was only natural that the young Buckler looked to those 1969 Adams X-Men Sentinel issues for reference and inspiration when he was illustrating the 1972 Avengers Sentinel issues #102-4. I did manage to read Av. #102 at the time of its publication and since I'd also read the Adams X-Men a few years earlier, I remember thinking that there were an awful lot of familiar images and poses in that Avengers comic.
Delete"Reference" and "inspiration?" Awww, you're so diplomatic. ;-)
